Deceased Name: LEON SCHWARTZ

Leon Schwartz, 97, of Virginia, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, in the Arrowhead Senior Living Community in Virginia.

 

Leon was born on Feb. 25, 1906, to Joseph and Frieda (Sankovich) Schwartz in Warsaw, Poland. He graduated from Virginia High School in 1924, Virginia Jr. College in 1926, and the University of MN in 1928, received a Bachelor's Degree in Romance Languages and from Harvard University in 1934 with a Master's Degree in Languages and Philology. His post graduate work was completed at the Sorbonne in Paris, the National University of Mexico City and the University of Madrid. He taught school at Raymond Riordon School in Highland, N.Y.; the Swavely School in Manassas, Virginia for a time and traveled around the world prior to returning to Virginia. He taught at the Virginia High School from 1934 to 1953 and at the Mesabi Community College from 1953 to 1973. He was for many years a member of the Scottish Rite, and the AAD Temple, both of Duluth; the Virginia Lodge #264 A.F. & A.M., B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1003 of Virginia, the B'nai Abraham Synagogue of Virginia; the Harvard Club of Minn., the Minn Educational Association, and the Retired Teachers of Minn.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Rose Gordon and Ida Karon; and three brothers, Alfred, Sam and Harry.

 

He is survived by several nieces and a nephew.

 

MEMORIAL SERVICES: Will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Range-Hebrew Section of Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.
